Port security

The Port of Kalundborg is critical infrastructure. That is why we set high standards for safety and preparedness – both in our daily work and in our collaboration with our customers and partners. It is not only about those who work at the port, but also about taking responsibility for the community and local area we are a part of.

The Port of Kalundborg follows both national and international legislation on port security.

The purpose of port security

The purpose of ISPS security is to prevent, among other things:

Three security levels are in place. The port's preparedness is continuously adjusted in relation to the current threat situation.

ISPS-secured areas

The Port of Kalundborg is an open and active commercial port, but certain areas are subject to stricter security measures.

This is due to the international requirements in the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code), which has been in force since July 1, 2004 for port facilities that receive ships over 500 gross tons in international traffic.

The ISPS Code is administered by the UN Maritime Organization IMO and sets rules to prevent and counter security threats to ships, ports and cargo.

Access to secured areas

The Port of Kalundborg has six areas that are activated as ISPS zones when ships call in. These areas are secured with fences, gates, electronic access control and clear signage with “ISPS area”.

When an area is active as an ISPS zone:

  • All visitors must be able to show valid ID
  • Should instructions from the port staff be followed?
  • Can there be manned access control at an increased security level?

If an area is not marked as an ISPS area, it is generally open to traffic. However, we would like to point out that temporary closures of quay areas may occur for reasons of cargo, equipment or other operations.

Access card

Companies with a permanent presence at the Port of Kalundborg can be issued access cards for employees and subcontractors. The card provides access to the port's facilities when relevant and approved.

To order access cards, the company must appoint a contact person who is approved by the Port of Kalundborg. The contact person is responsible for ordering and administering access cards.
