Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals extend cooperation until 2043

Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals have extended their cooperation agreement to ensure continued growth, high efficiency and strengthened container capacity - for the benefit of customers, partners and the local community.

The agreement means that APM Terminals extends its commitment to the container terminal at Ny Vesthavn in Kalundborg for another 10 years and also includes the option of a further extension so that the development of Kalundborg as a modern, competitive and responsible container port can continue.

The collaboration between the Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals was established in 2021, and since then the terminal – which as a deepwater terminal is the only terminal on Zealand that can accommodate large ships – has distinguished itself as an efficient and modern gateway for container traffic to and from Zealand. The extension reflects both parties' confidence in the potential of Kalundborg and the strength of the collaboration that has been built.

"I am pleased that with this agreement extension we confirm our common ambition to operate and develop an international-class container terminal, and that we do so with a long-term perspective. It is a strong signal to the market and an important step for Kalundborg as a modern commercial port," says Bent Rasmussen, Port Director at the Port of Kalundborg.

Responsible development with global reach

The collaboration builds on already implemented investments in electrification and more sustainable solutions. Through the joint initiative Green Zealand Gateway, the Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals are working towards reducing CO₂ emissions and developing the logistics of the future with respect for both the environment and local communities. Among other things, the Port of Kalundborg electrified the container cranes earlier this year – and further initiatives are on the way.

"We have great confidence in the development of Kalundborg - both because of the location and the strong, solution-oriented collaboration with the port. The fact that we are now extending our presence until 2043 sends a clear signal of our long-term commitment. We see Kalundborg as one of the most promising Danish locations for combining efficiency with sustainability in the logistics of the future," says Mikael Gutman, CEO of APM Terminals Nordics.

A partnership in development

Since the establishment of the container terminal, the Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals have expanded the areas and strengthened the infrastructure around container handling with modern facilities, including customs and veterinary control. The terminal has achieved international recognition for its productivity and in May 2025 set a global record for efficiency among all APM Terminals' locations with mobile cranes.

With the extension of the contract, both parties commit to maintaining and developing Kalundborg as a strong hub for container traffic - and as a responsible partner for customers, partners and the local environment.
