CO2 & CCUS

A new type of product

Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is becoming an important part of the green transition, and the Port of Kalundborg is preparing to handle liquid CO2 as a new type of commodity.

We actively participate in the development of regional CCUS infrastructure and are a founding member of CCS Zealand, where we are represented in the steering group together with emitters, storage operators and technology suppliers.

The Port of Kalundborg is the only port authority in the collaboration, which emphasizes our strategic importance.

Future potential

Early stage: Carbon capture projects in Denmark and Europe are still under development, and therefore we cannot yet describe specific handling tasks at the port.

Disembarkation and embarkation: We expect that in the short term Kalundborg will function as a shipping port for liquid CO2 destined for offshore storage, e.g. in the North Sea. In the longer term, we also see potential for shipping CO2 to onshore storage in the area.

CCS Zealand: Through CCS Zealand, we are collaborating to create a coherent infrastructure for the capture, transport and storage of CO2. Here, Kalundborg can act as a central hub connecting emitters and storage sites.

The strengths of the outer harbor

The outer harbor is ideally located for future CO2 activities.

The area has an area of 330,000 square meters and a 500 m long deep-water quay with a water depth of 15 m, which provides the necessary space and suitable water depth for the new generation of ships.

The location is remote – outside the urban area – and therefore suitable for handling new industrial activities that may require special security and distance from homes.

There are also good opportunities for future expansion of the port area, as well as for constructing the necessary facilities such as tanks, pipelines, etc. as the CCUS projects mature.

Next step

The CCUS area is rapidly developing, and the Port of Kalundborg is following suit. We will continuously update our customers and partners as specific projects and facilities take shape.

Until then, we are ready for dialogue with emitters, storage operators and other relevant players in the field who want to explore the possibilities of using the Port of Kalundborg as a hub for CO2 transport and logistics.
