Sustainability with

Bottom line in reality

Bæredygtighed

At Kalundborg Port, we work with sustainability in practice – every day. It is about both running a healthy and responsible business and taking care of the local community and the world we are a part of.

We prioritize green transition and work purposefully to reduce climate footprint and promote circular solutions - including in close collaboration with companies throughout Northwest Zealand.

At the same time, we take responsibility for our surroundings. We develop the port with respect for the fjord, nature, neighbors and city life. We think long-term, so that growth and well-being can go hand in hand – for the benefit of business, people and the environment.

Sustainability is not something we say. It is something we do.

Green transition

We are actively working to reduce our climate footprint and future-proof the port.

We do this through energy efficiency, investment in new technologies and by preparing green energy solutions such as shore power.

We believe that a modern port and responsible resource consumption can go hand in hand.

Local accountability

We operate the port with respect for our surroundings.

This means that we take the environment, noise, businesses and people into account in our decisions.

We collaborate with local businesses, associations and citizens and want to be an open and responsible neighbor who contributes positively to the local community.

Sustainable business

The Port of Kalundborg must continue to be a profitable company.

We are a commercial business and all profits are reinvested in the business and our further development.

A healthy economy gives us the freedom to act long-term and invest in future solutions.

Our trading room

As a municipal self-governing port, we are subject to the Danish Port Act and operate our business based on infrastructure. This means, among other things, that we are not allowed to operate a manufacturing business or produce green energy for the electricity grid.

So, there is a limit to how much our business and internal processes can participate in the green transition without external actors. But that doesn't mean we don't play a role in the green transition.

What can we do?

Our role is to create the right conditions on the quay. We build the facilities, we create the connections, and we support the collaborations that can bring green ambitions from idea to reality.

We are an active part of the Kalundborg Symbiosis, where we continuously introduce new port customers to the potential of the symbiosis. Here, it is always assessed whether new circular synergies can arise between the parties - because this is where the value of the future is created.

Green transition is not just about looking inward – it is also about opening up. That is why we work purposefully to be a strong and flexible partner for the companies and initiatives that push Denmark in a greener direction.

We are actively working to fully utilize our trading space.

Some examples of our targeted work to support the green transition at the port are:

  • Establishment of shore power – the first phase is already underway in Østhavnen.
  • Electrified container cranes – with the Zealand Green Gateway project, we are creating one of the world's first CO2-neutral container terminals in collaboration with APM Terminals.
  • Charging infrastructure for heavy vehicle traffic – in collaboration with Norlys, a rest area and truck charging station will be established at the container terminal.
  • Areas for future energy – we make our areas available to companies that support the green transition, such as offshore wind projects and logistics.
  • CCS Zealand and green partnerships – we take an active part in the development of a new value chain for CO2 as a climate commodity and tradeable commodity.

We take our role seriously – and we know that sustainability only becomes a reality if the framework is in place. We deliver that. We need your help with the content.
