Development
Kalundborg – Development with a focus on the future
For more than 1,000 years, the Port of Kalundborg has developed evolves in step with the needs of industry and society – from classic port operations such as fishing, ferries and freight to modern logistical and specialized port operations – with consideration for the environment and nature.
The most significant step in this development is the Outer Harbor: a significant expansion of the port area with 330,000 square meters of new commercial area, 500 meters of quay and 15 meters of water depth further outside the city and closer to the Great Belt.
Here, we create space for the companies of the future and an infrastructure that meets international requirements for efficiency, flexibility, and capacity.
The development of the port is taking place with a clear green We want to be a facilitator for growth and green transition, and we work actively to support the green transition – both as a service partner for port users and in our own operations.
We are preparing for shore power, promoting sustainable energy solutions and thinking circular resource utilization into everything from daily operations to future investments. We expect that in the future we will develop new business areas within green transition, such as wind turbine projects and CO2 management. And our Outer Harbor can be expanded within the current framework to the new business areas.
But development is not just about land and facilities. It is also about people. The Port of Kalundborg takes responsibility for the social and economic development of the local area. As junction for business and employment, we contribute to creating jobs, strengthening local collaborations and ensuring that growth and quality of life goes hand in hand.
Development projects in sight
Kalundborg Port is a port in constant development. Our development is driven by new needs, green ambitions and the desire to create a strong framework for future business, logistics and collaboration.
We follow developments closely and are ready to move in new directions. It is part of our DNA to be adaptable – we have been for 1,000 years, and we will be when the future comes.
We work for sustainable growth. This applies to both economic, environmental and social growth – and it must happen in close cooperation with companies, municipalities and local communities. For us, development is about creating solid frameworks for both goods, jobs and green transition.

Zealand's Green Gateway
At Kalundborg Port, we believe that green transition creates the greatest value, when it is developed in collaboration with those we share the berth with. That is why, together with APM Terminals Kalundborg, we have set ourselves a clear goal: to create Zealand's Green Gateway – a container terminal operated by 100 % CO2-neutral.
The project is about more than just different ways of doing things and new technology. It is about giving shipping companies, freight forwarders, hauliers, and retailers the opportunity to get their goods from quay to customer in a responsible manner – even when it comes from afar.
We have already achieved several of the goals we have set for ourselves – and we are proud that together with our partners we have come this far. But we are not finished. Zealand's Green Gateway is a living vision, and we look forward to new solutions, new partnerships and new steps in the right direction.
Initiatives in Zealand's Green Gateway
- Zealand's Green Gateway is defined – Completed 2023
- Conversion from diesel to HVO on APM Terminals' rolling stock – Completed 2023
- Food, veterinary and customs controls run on solar energy – Completed 2023
- Electrification of Kalundborg Port's cranes – Completed 2025
- Electrification of APM Terminals' rolling stock – Completed 2026
- Construction of a charging station for electric trucks – Project planning
- Construction of a CO2-neutral office building for APM Terminals – Project planning
Green transition requires joint action.
Should we take the first – or next – step together? Let's talk about how we can create value together.
Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage
At Kalundborg Port, we see CCUS – Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage – as an important next step in the green conversion. New technologies make it possible to capture, use and store the CO2 that would normally be emitted in production or that is already in the atmosphere.
That's why we focus on creating the right frames, so that the CO2 infrastructure of the future can be developed and anchored here with us.
We are already in dialogue with several players who work with the collection, conversion, storage and transport of CO2, and we see clear potential in making Kalundborg a center for handling, intermediate storage and loading and unloading of CO2 – both nationally and internationally.
Our location on the Great Belt, the good access conditions and our experience as an industry partner makes us an obvious part of the infrastructure that will make CO2 storage and recycling a real solution.

Expansion & growth
The Port of Kalundborg is growing – both physically and organizationally. Based on our role as Zealand's deep-water port No. 1, we have expanded our capacity significantly in recent years; not least with the establishment of Yderhavnen, which today forms the framework for our container activities and offers modern facilities with up to 15 meters of water depth and large hinterland areas.
But growth is not just about more quays and square meters. It is also about people; about being enough to take on the task and being equipped to keep up with developments. That is why we are growing and strengthened our organization in line with an increasing level of activity, new collaboration opportunities and demand for future competencies.
We invest in being a professional and collaboratively driven port – not just in infrastructure, but also in relationships, service and skills.
