Kalundborg has developed into an important industrial and logistical hub in Denmark in just a few years. Significant investments in industry, port and terminal operations have significantly strengthened the area and created an efficient and robust flow of goods to and from the sea. Today, Kalundborg plays a central role in both national and international supply chains.
To support continued development, stakeholders in and around the port point to the need for the onshore infrastructure to follow suit. In particular, the cross-motorway Route 22 is a crucial piece in ensuring connectivity between the port, industry and the rest of Zealand.
Route 22 as a central part of the overall logistics solution
According to APM Terminals, the connection between sea and land is crucial to exploiting the investments that have already been made in the port and terminal.
“"We have a strong and close collaboration with the Port of Kalundborg and are continuously investing in sustainable and efficient logistics solutions. A well-functioning land infrastructure is an important prerequisite for the overall logistics solution to function optimally," says Mikael Gutman, CEO, APM Terminals Nordics.
An upgrade of Route 22 will strengthen the connection between Zealand's manufacturing companies, the Port of Kalundborg and international markets. At the same time, it can contribute to relieving traffic towards the capital area and creating more coherent and competitive transport solutions across the region.
“"For many years, the Port of Kalundborg has invested purposefully in both the capacity of our cranes, in sustainable solutions and in our collaborations. We see a large, untapped potential in the area, which can benefit both business and society if the port's strong position is supported by a modern and efficient land infrastructure," says Bent Rasmussen, CEO of the Port of Kalundborg.
With continued investments in both port, terminal and land infrastructure, Kalundborg has the potential to maintain and expand its role as a central hub for sustainable and efficient logistics - for the benefit of business, local communities and a sustainable transition.
Sustainable investments have elevated Kalundborg to an international level
Through a close and long-term public-private partnership, the Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals have invested in sustainable logistics solutions. The investments include electrified cranes, electrical terminal equipment and energy-efficient container operations. The partnership is called Green Zealand Gateway and aims to support sustainable growth and efficient supply chains in collaboration with both industry and the local area.
The combined investments have placed the Kalundborg container terminal among the most efficient in APM Terminals' global network. Today, a truck can drive in and out of the terminal in under 10 minutes – the fastest handling time across APM Terminals' terminals. In addition, the Kalundborg container terminal also has the highest crane productivity among APM Terminals' terminals with mobile harbour cranes. This contributes to high productivity, high operational reliability and efficient supply chains, which create value not only for the transport sector, but for the entire economy.
The Port of Kalundborg is also the only deep-water port on Zealand that can receive large container ships. This gives the area a particularly strategic importance for security of supply, imports and exports.
