Important new construction for Kalundborg's container terminal

The Port of Kalundborg is starting to build permanent facilities for customs and veterinary control at Ny Vesthavn. Veterinary control in particular is important for the continued development of APM Terminals' container terminal in Kalundborg

The Port of Kalundborg has signed a contract with the engineering company Læssøe-Simonsen A/S for the construction of a 920 square meter building at Ny Vesthavn. The building, which will be located close to the entrance and in immediate extension of the container terminal, is important for the continued development of the container terminal at the Port of Kalundborg.

-At the beginning of the new year, we will start the construction of a building for customs and veterinary control at Ny Vesthavn. We already have customs control in some temporary facilities out there, but veterinary control in particular offers new opportunities for the container terminal. Therefore, as a board, we naturally fully support the port's management in the decision to initiate this investment, says Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kalundborg Port, Jesper Wienmann Hansen.

The Port of Kalundborg will pay 13.392 million DKK for the construction of the new building. In addition, the establishment of a new road, sewage system, paved areas, parking lot and underground supply lines will cost 2.605 million DKK, so in total it amounts to approximately 16.5 million DKK. This is money that the port will pay out of its cash and cash equivalents.

Important for the container terminal

The new building will house all the necessary facilities for both customs and veterinary control. The building will be constructed with lock ramps and other necessary facilities so that customs and veterinary control employees can check the contents of the containers.

"Once we have the new building ready for use, we can offer the full range of services that are normally associated with a container terminal. It is therefore an important step that ensures the container terminal's progress and continued development," says Port Director Bent Rasmussen.

Veterinary inspection is especially important because certain types of goods simply require the presence of a veterinary inspection, explains Kalundborg Port's sales manager Michael Larsen.

-This could include imports of animal products, certain foods, animal feed and even plastic kitchenware from certain countries. There are some companies that have not been able to get their goods in via Kalundborg until now because we have lacked a veterinary inspection. But we will be able to offer this in the future. Therefore, the construction is an important prerequisite for us to be able to take additional market shares in the Zealand container market, says Michael Larsen.

General contractor with several tasks in Kalundborg

The construction is being carried out by the experienced engineering company Læssøe-Simonsen A/S, which is the turnkey contractor for the project and has won the tender.

-We have designed the building and are responsible for everything during the construction process. Among other things, we are the ones who hire companies for the various tasks that arise along the way. We are already working with the construction of industrial buildings and warehouses, and we have been responsible for the construction of several warehouses at Sydhavnen, so you can say that this task is right up our alley, says Jesper Simonsen from Læssøe-Simonsen.

He adds that Læssøe-Simonsen is currently involved in several construction projects in Kalundborg, including several at Kalundborg Port. It is also expected that Læssøe-Simonsen will receive more assignments in Kalundborg in the future.

Construction of facilities for customs and veterinary control will begin at the beginning of the new year and is scheduled to be ready for operation no later than August 7, 2023.
