APM Terminals already leases 50,000 square meters for the container terminal at Ny Vesthavn, but now the Maersk company will also have control over the rest of Ny Vesthavn, except for the areas that are leased to other companies. Among others, the cruise operator Global Ports Holding has leased an area at Ny Vesthavn, which will of course be kept free of containers.
"It is an exciting task that we are very much looking forward to carrying out as efficiently and smoothly as possible. But it requires a lot of preparation, among other things the remaining area at Ny Vesthavn is only covered with stable gravel and sand, which is not good enough to place containers on. So we are currently having 1500 road plates laid out in the area, which the containers can temporarily stand on", says Port Director Bent Rasmussen.
In addition, a larger number of reefer plugs must be installed for the containers that must be connected to the electricity supply.
It is currently unknown how many containers will come to Kalundborg for temporary storage. But it will certainly be a five-figure number. If space at Ny Vesthavn runs out, some of the containers may end up in Østhavnen, where the container terminal was previously located.
The containers will be shipped here on Maersk Line's own ships. The first ship, Vaga Maersk, will arrive on Friday, March 11th in the morning, and after that the ships will arrive in a steady stream.
"We are therefore actively searching for experienced crane operators who can operate a Gottwald crane and have experience with containers. It is actually a task in itself to find enough crane operators for the task, who can support our own skilled crane operators," says Bent Rasmussen.
At the same time as this new "enormous" activity, we must also take care of the normal 2 to 3 weekly arrivals of container ships with imports and exports and thus loading and unloading - This navigation is still carried out by the shipping company Unifeeder's ships.
We look forward to serving our fantastic partner APMT with these tasks.
